For this task you are required to utilise at least four scholarly/academic sources in addition to those we have provided. You may use academic/scholarly source
material from the text and additional readings provided in the learning guide or on vUWS, but if you do these must be in addition to the minimum four
scholarly/academic sources required. Essays that do not comply with this requirement will be penalised.

Essay questions
1/ The greater presence and stronger influence of transnational actors in global affairs has undermined the state-centred approach to international relations. Discuss.
2/ The liberalisation of trade and investment generates �winners� and �losers� in the international system. Does the promotion of liberalisation by international
institutions such as the WTO and World Bank perpetuate the continuing inequality between the world�s most developed and least developed countries?
3/ The political implications of the responsibility to protect (R2P) outweigh legal considerations so that humanitarian intervention is rarely considered on ethical
grounds. Do you agree?
4/ The rational actor model focuses on the actions of leaders. A central premise of the model is that leaders will act in a rational manner in the pursuit of national
interests of their nation-state. Do you agree?
5/ When thinking about the nation-state John Stoessinger wrote: �Whether it be born, to live, or to die, [man] cannot do without official recognition – the recognition
of a nation-state� (The Might of Nations, 4th edition, 1973). In your view, is Stoessinger correct? What are the implications of his argument for international
politics?
6/ The proliferation of nuclear weapons (not exclusivity) would make the world a safer place. Discuss.
