Purpose and Description
In preparation for the final paper in this course. you will be perfecting your skills at integrating your research
into the existing conversation. Use the “They Say/I Say” method by introducing their ideas first then reacting
to them with your argument and research. Your aim in this exercise will be to present your topic then practice
integrating your ideas with the Primary Sources using two methods. (The Primary Sources are Frans de Waal
and Peter Singer.)
1: Write a paragraph in which you introduce your topic about a human/animal relationship that has ethical
implications.
2: Explain your ethical reasoning on the topic.
3: REACT to what they say with reasons-
Present a sentence or short paraphrase from one primary source as you would in your paper. then
either state your agreement. disagreement. or how you both agree and disagree. – I agree with X’s assertion that
because… – I disagree with Y’s claim that . because… – I agree with W. but only to the point where he claims
but I do not reach the same conclusions
because“.

42 Use a primary source to SUPPORT YOUR POSITION-
You may be talking about different things on a specific level. but you can use their ideas in a general
sense. – Even though de Waal does not specifically address dolphins in his speech. it is my contention that he
would agree with me due to his insistence that . – The clipping of birds’ beaks in large-scale poultry facilities
demonstrably causes a great deal of suffering
to the chickens with no clear moral justification. Peter Singer argues that we treat animals this way
strictly “for our convenience.” and is an example of what he calls “Speciesism.”
