Human-Robot Relations: Should we be worried? Academic Essay

Human-Robot Relations: Should we be worried?

There are growing concerns about how people are looking more and more to robotic toys and tools for companionship, and less to other people. Innovations such as Siri, Apple’s iPhone digital assistant, have trained people to rely on machines in new ways, and to envision a future where robots are advanced enough to serve as teachers for the young, and caretakers for the old. The idea of some kind of artificial companionship has already become quite normal – kids play with robotic pets and become allies with computer game agents. For adults we can create ‘sexbots’ – the infrastructure and technology exist to create a robot with synthetic skin and artificial intelligence capable of learning owners’ preferences and designed to express love and affection. But for the idea of artificial companionship to become our new normal, we have to change ourselves, and reconsider human values and human connection. What are the potential benefits and pitfalls of human-robot relations?
