a. Is the article a description of an actual study or is it a summary of actual studies or a meta-analysis? (If it is a summary or studies or a meta-analysis you need to find a different article)
b. What is the design of the study? Is it an experiment/clinical trial or is it an observational design? If it is observational, is it a case-control or a cohort design?
c. What was the research question being asked by the authors?
(i). What were the authors trying to find out in general?
(ii). What was the specific hypothesis being evaluated by the study?
d. Specifically, how was the sample population selected? Be very specific.
(i). For experimental designs, what criteria were used to include participants in the study? What criteria were used to sort participants into the experimental group vs. the control group?
(ii). For case-control designs, what criteria were used to include participants as a case? What criteria were used to select participants for the control group?
(iii). For cohort designs, what criteria were used to include participants in the exposed group? What criteria were used to select participants for the non-exposed group?
e. What was the main statistical test used to evaluate the study’s hypothesis? This will be the statistical test that specifically addresses the hypothesis listed in c.(ii).
f. What additional descriptive or analytic statistical evaluations were done to prepare the data for the main statistical test?
(i). Did the authors evaluate the demographics in both groups (case/control, exposed/non-exposed, experiment/control) to identify possible sources of bias in the data? If so, what facts did they consider? (frequency by age/gender, etc.)
(ii). Did the authors adjust the study data to correct for differences between the groups (direct/indirect standardization, etc.)
g. What was the numerical finding from the main statistical test used to evaluate the study’s hypothesis? This should list the finding (like the Relative Risk, etc.) and the p-value or the finding and the Confidence Interval.
h. If the study reports a p-value, how do you interpret the p-value? (This is not in general, this is interpreting the actual value in the study.) If the study reports confidence interval(s), interpret what the C.I. means. (This isn’t the definition it is what does the actual C.I. in the study mean.)
i. What does the finding of the main statistical test mean? Is the author’s hypothesis correct?
j. What impact should the results of this study have on the health professions? Are the findings important? Why are they important? What will change if we do something different because of the findings of this study? (This isn’t what might change, this is what change does this study justify in and of itself?)
k. What should be done to improve this study?

Answer the same questions for Articles 2 and 3

Conclusion: When you consider the findings and results of all of your studies, what further studies need to be done to expand our understanding of the topic you chose? (These suggestions should be the result of the studies you reviewed, not just new ideas of what could be done. What new ideas did the studies stimulate?) It is OK to say that the studies didn’t do much of anything to generate new ideas.

Your final submission needs to be a complete, finished work and the same topic for all three articles. It does not need to be in the format of a prose paper. It is preferred that you simply provide the answers to the questions in this outline retaining the outline structure. This makes the assignment a question and answer exercise.
