Flood Discharge in Lake Tahoe

Hello,

I will update this as we progress through the paper. Basically, I will need the paper written in parts and I will be submitting these parts to my professor as we finish them. The basic idea of this paper has to do with stream flow from the Truckee River and discharge into Lake Tahoe. I aim to decide whether or not heightened stream discharges from climate change and what happens to the lake clarity. This was the first email my professor sent me.

Here’s the first email from my professor:

The hypothesis is fine. I invite you to develop a scale to rate your flow events – probably best to be an exponential scale as flows increase suspension capacity exponentially. For example, if your maximum observed flow is 10,000 cfs, that is much more than twice as capable of erosion and sediment suspension than a 5,000 cfs flow would be. You could look for a stream power index – I’m sure there are many published – then apply that to your observed flows.

In other words, if a 12,000 cfs flow is relatively very high for a specific stream, assign that a value of 10. A 6,000 cfs flow may be only 30% as powerful, so you assign it a 3. If those are your only high flows that season, add them up and that winter gets a score of 13. For each stream you’ll have to either identify the maximum observed flood, or find out what a 100 year flood volume is.

This way you don’t only include the seasons’ single highest flow, but all high flows over some “normal” high flow which you also get to set. You assign each flow a “power” indicator, add those up for the season, and then compare that total to lake clarity the following summer.

Once you finish the above email from my professor, we will follow these steps.

1. Once you submit the data to me and we get the OK to start writing the paper, I would like you to write the abstract and introduction. I will then submit that portion to my professor to make sure we are still on the right track. 3. Next we will write the methods, results, and conclusion. This will require a lot of rewriting, as my professor is definitely going to want the best. There will definitely be some re-writing in this area. My teacher is going to want to guide me through the whole paper, hence why there’s steps. I tried submitting a paper through this site already and the paper didn’t amount up to what my professor wanted.

I need a solid abstract and introduction with the key research completed. I will send that to my professor when complete and once we get the OK, finish up the methods results, and conclusion sections.
