Answer the following questions about the final, climatic story in the Gospel of Matthew.
The Place of Assembly
Look at 28:16. We don’t know exactly when this meeting takes place between Jesus and his
disciples. It’s not immediately after the resurrection, but possibly 15-20 days later. But where
does this meeting occur?
The disciples and Jesus met in Galilee.
The Reaction of the People Assembled
Look at 28:17. According to Bible commentators, it’s likely that more than just the eleven
disciples were present. What were the two responses of those gathered when they saw the risen
Jesus? How do you think you might have responded to seeing Jesus?
Some people worshiped him, and others doubted his existence since he had been crucified. I
would have doubted as well, since the idea of coming back to life is skeptical.
The Proclamation to Those Assembled
In 28:18-20, Jesus makes three declarations.
The Power Possessed
Look at 28:18. What has been given to Jesus? To what extent has it been given?
All authority and power from heaven and Earth had been given to Jesus.
The Plan Commissioned
Look at 28:19-20a. The resurrection of Jesus and the power he now possess is the springboard
for mission. What are Jesus’ followers charged to do? How are they to accomplish the task?
Jesus demands that his disciples to go out and make more of all the nations; this can be
accomplished by baptism in the name of the Father, the son and the Holy Spirit, as well as
following everything that Jesus commands of them.
The Promised Presence
Look at 28:20. What awareness should the disciples have as they carry out Jesus’ command?
Jesus wants his disciples to know that he is with them always.
Overall, how do you imagine Jesus’ resurrection and his Great Commission provides ultimate
purpose and meaning to the lives of believers?
Knowing that Jesus had made the ultimate sacrifice and rose from it inspires his followers and
others to dedicate themselves to his teachings. It means that all the hard work is over. His
followers can rest easily, so long as they obey the commandments, and rely on Jesus to save
them once they have died as well.
