2.Reading Log Assignment 9: For this essay, you need to compare and contrast a picture book to a novel. Select one picture book and one novel from the reading choices in the lesson, making sure that both books are in the same historical period. To help you analyze each reading choice, consider answering the following questions (these are for your use only – you do not need to submit answers to these questions).

Picture Book Questions
a.What events in history does the story portray?
b.What was the plot line? Where did the climax occur? What were the issues in this period and how did they affect the child in the story?
c.In what way did the illustrations show the period and how did the author present the difficulty during this period through the illustrations?

Novel Questions

When you have completed both books, write an essay that compares and contrasts the novel you read to the picture book. Be sure to identify the title and author of each book in your essay. Include in your writing answers to the following questions:

b.How do the authors of these books present historical issues? In what ways were they alike or different?
c.What background information might you give a child before sharing each of these stories with them?
d.How are the characters in both books affected by the issues of the time and how do they (or don’t they) cope with the changes?
e.What sacrifices, did the main character make in each story? How is the theme different and/or the same in each book?
f.What did you learn from reading these two books that you didn’t know about that period before?
