OSHA Standard 29CFR 1926:850(a) requires that an engineering survey be performed prior to beginning any demolition project. The purpose of the engineering survey is to determine the condition of the structure to be demolished along with any nearby structures in order to determine what steps need to be taken to safeguard worker health and safety and to prevent premature collapse of the structure. The engineering survey also includes the complete A to Z plan for the demolition of the structure and includes the methodof demolition, equipment needed, needed manpower, PPE and other safety equipment and signage, location of utilities, definition of potential hazards, preparations necessary to protect the public and any adjacent structures, establishing procedures for fighting fires, treating medical or injury issues and maintaining contacts with utilities, firefighters, medical personnel and police.

The demolition of a two-story wood structure begins with the preparation of the engineering survey which should contain an evaluation of the condition of the structure to be demolished, installing any required support structures to prevent the building from premature collapse, the location of all utilities, the establishment of medical services and first aid, fire prevention, location and identification of any hazardous chemicals, gases, flammable or combustible materials, preparing an adequate supply of safety equipment, including PPE, andmaintaining a supply of water, pumps, and fire extinguishers at the worksite. In addition, the contractor will determine the type of equipment necessary to clean up the site after the demolition is complete.
