The book is really interested in how the French experience in Vietnam somehow impacts the American experience in Vietnam. What is he explicity arguing? Does he have an implied argument? Does his argument simply make perfect sense? What are his strengths, but also what are the possible weaknesses or at least where he isn’t completely correct?

Finally, where could different decisions have been made by states or by individuals to alter the tragic course of this history and the events that will happen after 1960?
