Electoral College
Prompt: In the Constitution the Framers outlined a system of representative government that was designed to avoid the flaws of direct democracy. The mechanism for
electing the President in this system is described in Article II, wherein the Framers established that the states would select electors who would then represent their
best interests in electing a new president. This process was later modified by the Twelfth Amendment after the contentious election of Thomas Jefferson in 1800.
Over time critics of the Electoral College have proposed various amendments to it, and some have argued for the replacement of it. One of the more recent proposals is
the National Popular Vote Plan. This plan would require an interstate compact of no less than three-fourths of the states. These states would agree to award their
electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote. This would address one of the major criticisms of the Electoral College, which is that someone can win the
presidency, but not achieve the majority of popular votes. Argue for or against the adoption of the National Popular Vote Plan as a better mechanism of representative
government than the Electoral College.
