Domestic Violence and gun ownership

This paper is supposed to be an assessment of how to balance the right for citizens to own firearms and the protection of victims of domestic violence since murders committed during Domestic Violence situations generally are killed with firearms. My stance I would like to be portrayed is that current legislation is as effective as possible in preventing gun deaths in DV situations since murders in DV are actually fairly rare and the current laws already restrict ownership of firearms from people convicted of Domestic Violence. Below is the Reasearch paper outline I created for the course and for the most part these points need to be followed and touched on. All topic points (A,B,C,D,E) need to be expanded on and researched. You do not need to answer on exactly what the topic points say as they can be slightly adjusted but the main points of each need to be covered. There is a requirement for the main body of the paper to be 7 pages, double spaced in size 12 Times New Roman font and a requirement for at least 7 credible academic sources. Other sources can be used but there must be 7 credible academic sources at least.

Guns and Domestic Violence – How do We Balance the Legal Right to Bear Arms and Safety?
Explain and present data on the relationship between guns and D.V.; explore the Lautenberg
Amendment/Act and other gun control approaches being used in domestic violence cases and
situations.
II. Answer to the Question (Your Position)
I believe that the current legislation is as effective as possible in reducing the use of firearms in
Domestic Violence while still maintaining a balance for the the right to own firearms. Further
legislation restricting gun ownership in regards to DV will not have a significant effect on DV gun
rates. I believe a harder push on charging people with DV and then utilizing existing legislation to
bar them from gun ownership is a better course of action.

A. Statistical information for gun ownership and gun use in domestic violence. Research/data
will be investigated to see what if any correlation there is between having a gun in the
household and it being used in a domestic violence situation.
B. The Lautenberg Act. Explore the history and purpose of the Lautenberg Act and how it
attempts to prevent gun violence especially in domestic situations.
C. Explore other legislation passed to help prevent Domestic Gun Violence. I will explore the
details of the lautenberg and other legislation and research their effectiveness in
preventing gun violence in DV homes.
D. Compare current U.S. regulations versus international regulations in regards to Domestic
Violence rates. Do countries that have stricter gun ownership laws have lower domestic
gun violence rates? Is it possible that other factors may influence these rates.
E. Explore the use of harder prosecution of DV cases as a way of preventing gun ownership
utilizing existing legislation effectively.
