Dispensing with Consent to Adoption

The research exercise is worth 40% of the total marks for this class. It will take the form of an exercise in research and presentation entitled �Dispensing with Consent to Adoption�. Students must discover and explain the circumstances in which a court may dispense with parental consent to the making of an adoption order over a child, this in both Scots law and the law of ONE other jurisdiction, other than England (NB: The United States is composed of 50 jurisdictions; Australia of 7). Scots law on the matter will be easily discovered within the class materials; the research element comes in finding out what the rule is in another legal system. (You are not required to find a foreign system of law that has an equivalent or similar rule to that applying in Scotland. The purpose is to find out what the foreign rule is, not to find a similar foreign rule). Use PRIMARY material (normally, but not always, legislation) as the basis of your presentation and do not rely on secondary material � which is useful only insofar as it directs you to the primary source. It is the primary source you are seeking to find and for which you will gain your marks.
