Develop a plan for your own weekly tabloid-format newspaper
Order Description
Develop a plan for your own weekly tabloid-format newspaper with at least 24 pages. Explain your plan in a 800 word report, led by a synopsis.
(BTW, in spite of popular wisdom, the word “tabloid” refers to the size of the newspaper pages. Some people wrongly use that term to describe a sensationalistic newspaper).

You may ALSO decide to produce/propose an online version of your newspaper. But you cannot create just an online version.

You do NOT have to write the 24 or more pages of the newspaper. What I ask is for a detailed description of your newspaper. Start by explaining why you have chosen your newspaper and what you want
to accomplish with it.

Why is there a need for this newspaper? Who will be your readers? Why do they need your publication? Who would be your advertisers? Why would they want to place an ad in your newspaper?

As with the other assignments, the final project reports will be posted in the Discussion Board by midnight on Friday, Nov. 25, and the class discussion for you to comment on each other’s work,
will be from Nov. 25 to midnight Friday, Dec. 9.

Consider the following in your report and explain your choices:

• Editorial content. If ethnic, will it be written in the foreign language, in English, both? How many sections will it have? What are those sections – opinion, sports, entertainment, etc.? How
many pages would you devote to each section? Will your newspaper focus on international, national, local news? Or all of the above? Would you create a niche publication, for example, dedicated only
to sports, or even a specific sport? You must decide on a publication that would not just appeal to you, but to many people. Would it be an ethnic or mainstream publication and why?

• Advertising/Classifieds What percentage of your paper would you devote to advertising? Again, given the publication you envision, what kind of advertisers do you think you can attract? How much
do you think you can charge for ads? Would you even bother creating a classified section? Why? Who would want to buy a classified ad in your publication?

• How many issues would you print? Where would your newspaper be distributed? Would it be sold or free? Why?

• Online version. Who is your readership? How would you attract readers to your site? How often would it be updated? How much would you charge for online ads?

• Bottom line. Can your proposed publication realistically sell enough ads and get enough subscriptions to raise enough funds to pay a staff to produce the news content you want to offer? – not to
mention printing costs, etc.?

I don’t want to see idealistic proposals for dream newspapers. Your proposal must be REALISTIC, especially regarding how you expect to raise funds and from whom. For example, if you want to start
an ethnic weekly, based on what you have already learned in this course, you should not expect many full page ads from major advertisers. But you might be able to get those big ads from government
agencies. It’s not about the advertisers you choose. It’s about the advertisers who would chose the kind of publication you are proposing to publish.
