3D Design Unit 7 Essay Brief:
At the start of next year, for Unit 9, you will begin a piece of extended writing on a topic related to your practice. Unit 7 provides an opportunity to prepare for this through sustained reflection upon your own work and concerns, and the relation of your work and concerns to those of others.

For Unit 7, you will produce a piece of writing in which you explore, in some detail, a piece of design that you feel shares some common ground with your own practice. You should not write directly about your own work or practice in your essay; you should choose a design by another designer through which you can discuss themes that are relevant to your own practice and interests.

Content
Select a design that is of particular significance to your practice.
Articulate the historical and theoretical context of the design’s significance, both for you and for others or more publicly:
• What concerns does the solution respond to? What debates within design does it join? What are the positions / tensions within this debate, and how does your chosen design relate to them? Ensure that you make use of relevant primary research materials.
• Articulate precisely what the significance of the design is for you. Perhaps it arises from a certain attention to process or material that you identify with in your own work. In that case, with close reference to these qualities in the design , explain and describe this relation to your own interests. Alternatively, the design may engage with certain ideas, themes or problems that you are also exploring in your own practice. In that case, identify these ideas and explain how they are given form in the work that you have selected.
• Describe the views of at least one, and no more than three, commentator(s), and assess how they relate – for instance, agree or disagree – with your own views about the design. These secondary research materials may be historical or more recent. Ensure that you use high quality sources.

Form
Your writing should contain the elements referred to above. However, this list is not a plan. It identifies items that you should include within your writing, but it does not specify a proportion, i.e. how much space should be allotted to each. Nor does it direct an order of presentation. You will need to work this out for yourself according to the design that you chose and its particular relation to your own practice and concerns.
