Research Paper Assessment
Students will complete a research paper discussing the ethical considerations and dilemmas in their chosen profession.
Paper Overview
The purpose of this assignment is to assist you in refining the understanding of the ethical requirements of your profession. You will identify your own ethical system and the ethical system used by your profession, including its code of ethics. You will also determine several types professional-client relationships and how ethics fit into these relationships.
The paper also assesses your professional ethical problem-solving capabilities. You will identify an ethical problem that occurred in your profession and determine what needs to be done to achieve a specific level of ethical behavior in employees, management, executives, clients and/or other stakeholders. This will be a formalized examination, evaluation, and analysis of an ethical issue where both personal and organizational perspectives will be explored.
To do this, you will evaluate a current news article involving an ethics issue or incident for your specific profession (Business, Engineering, Education, or Computer Science). This article can be no more than 2 years old and must be approved by your professor. Please complete the elements listed below.
Assignment Components
Specific paper requirements are as follows. Each of these bullet items should be in a separate section in the paper (APA format Level 1).
Prepare an introduction – tell the reader what your paper contains as an overview.
Identify your personal ethical system out of the systems we have discussed in class (e.g. duty-driven, relativism, utilitarian, egoist, hedonist, contemporary virtue, or consequentialist). Support this choice.
Which ethical system is used most often in your profession? Explain your rational.
Find a code of ethical principles for your chosen profession (Check with professional organizations or the state). List and explain at least five key elements or concerns in this code of ethics. Note: Attach as a copy of the code of ethics from the professional organization as a separate document when you submit the paper.
Provide a short summary of your approved article about an ethical issue in your profession.
Identify the primary issue or problem in the article. (You may try putting yourself in the position of one of the key players.)
Identify key players (at least 4) in the article.
Compare the ethics used in the article by the key players with the ethical principles/code for your profession. Are there similarities? Where are the differences?
Analyze Article – Consider the following elements and write a summary of your findings
a. Work at gaining a better understanding of the causes of the issues. In what areas do the problems exist? Why?
b. What caused the issues? Examine and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the processes—such as planning and communication—human behaviors, and exhibits such as financial statements and sales reports. Check the effectiveness of managerial competencies.
a. Are the objectives and strategies compatible with its skills and resources?
Determine alternatives – Examine various alternatives. Weigh the pros and cons of each alternative. Are they feasible? Decide on the most valid one.
Make recommendations. Draft a set of recommendations on what must be done and prepare an agenda of corrective actions all of which conform to your profession’s code of ethics. Provide reasons for your recommendations.

Prepare a conclusion that summaries your paper
Include a Bibliography or List of References (At least 5 academic resources)
Complete the assignment in a 1200 – 1400 word paper in APA format.

2. The paper should have at least 5 references, including your textbook. Be sure these are in APA format.
3. All written assignment should follow proper APA format including citation rules for attributing sources. Please use your copy of a sample paper from the Purdue Owl website.
4. Please, use Microsoft Word spelling/grammar checker before submitting your paper.
5. Cite all non-original passages using APA format in text and in the reference list. Plagiarism in this paper will result in you receiving a zero on the assignment and most likely failing the class.

Defines the ethical system in the study and compares the systems of the key players with the professional norm. 15 pts.
Analyzed and evaluated areas in which problem existed, causes, and strengths/weaknesses of the ethical code in place. Checked effectiveness of managerial competencies including objectives and strategies compatible with its skills and resources.
25 Pts.
Examined various alternatives. Weighed the pros and cons of each with feasibility and made recommendations. Identify best recommendation 20
