Criminal Justice Academic Essay

For the quantitative data collection (part 1): In Ch 9 in your textbook there should be a chart (old edition should say exhibit 9.6) (new edition should say exhibit 9.7) with a list of physical disorder and social disorder. For this assignment members are to collect data on 5 indicators of physical disorder and 2 to 3 indicators of social disorder. As you observe your location (please be safe everyone!) make a chart for each location and jot down or tally the number of time you seen the indicator.

ex: location 1

# of cigarettes bud found on the street: 15
# of garbage/ liter found on the street: 7
location 2

# of cigarettes bud found on the street: 32
# of garbages/ liter found on the street: 12

Below is a list of indicators our group has decided to do for our study.

Physical disorder:

Cigarettes, cigars on street or gutter
Garbage, litter on street or sidewalk
Empty beer bottles visible in street
Tagging graffiti
Graffiti paint over
Social disorder: (Since these are a little harder to find I listed out all of the indicator for the social disorder. Just be observant with your location and see if you can find any of these indicator)

people intoxicated
prostitutes on streets
Adults loitering or congregating
people drinking alcohol
peer group, gang indicators present
Adults fighting or hostilely arguing
people selling drugs
For the qualitative data collection (part 2): for this data collection, while you observe your 3 location write down characteristics you think may enhance or mitigate fear among visitor and residents

ex: you notice the stores/houses are in bad shape (their old, has lots of broken windows, graffiti is written all over it) or you notice there a lot of police officer walking around

On the assignment page (go to course > assignment >assignment 4) the professor has listed some things you can take into consideration to help collect your qualitative data

qualitative pedestrian (are people walking in groups/by themselves, are their families walking, are they talking their time/ speed walking as if their in a hurry?)
what does the landscape look like(lots of construction, houses are in poor condition/good condition)?
are the commercial area near residential area? (are the houses near any stores/ stores near any houses)
demographic (age, gender, ethnicity/race)
The location should be in Denver.
