1. Choose a simple, specific process that you are familiar with and that you complete regularly.
Examples

• Ironing a shirt
• Drawing a simple 2D shape using AutoCAD
• Using a specific piece of lab equipment
• Using a specific tool
• Filling a car with gasoline
• Purchasing an item online
• Doing dishes
• Completing a set of reps for a workout (choose one exercise)
• Completing a Yoga flow
• Changing a tire
• Printing an item using the print center at the college

2. Create a rough draft of your instructions, being careful to include all necessary instructional steps.

3. Ensure your document includes the following elements:
• A general description of the process (who completes the process, what the purpose is, definition of object or process, importance of process, overview of steps)
• Diagrams or general illustrations (may be incorporated throughout document)
• Warnings/dangers/cautions (placed near introduction and throughout document, as necessary)
o Danger- warns reader of immediate hazard
o Warning- alerts reader of potential threat that could cause injury
o Caution- alerts the reader of potential damage to equipment or failure of the process

• A list of parts and/or required materials
• Step-by-step guidelines that focus on three parts (i.e. assembly, usage, and maintenance; or other appropriate categories or aspects of the object)
o Use subheadings (i.e. step 1, step 2, step 3, etc.)
o Have short, simple sentences/bullets
o Use the imperative voice
o Include graphics, as needed, to show the results and techniques
• Troubleshooting (i.e. you may include a table with possible problems and outline solutions)
• References (if needed)

4. Type your document and format it for clarity and ease of reading. Use colour and white space effectively. Do not include a separate title page. References may be included at the end of the document – a separate page is not required.

5. Bring a printed draft of this instruction set to class at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 10, 2017.
