Continuity of Orientalism in Architecture
Order Description
Feedback from dissertation tutor: The proposal attempts to engage with Edwards Said’s critique of Orientalism through three strands: continuity of orientalism, ontological distinction with and domination over the orient. She needs to consider the shortcomings of Said’s work itself, as these have been adequately critiqued. Nevertheless the question of whether orientalism persists in contemporary society is a fascinating one and seems to be the main research question. She needs to develop a framework for analysis for what she understands by orientalism. There is no mention of a case study and one needs to be selected urgently. Once this is decided questions of methodology and presentation will become clearer.
