Title: Comprehensive Systems Thinking Project
As a systems thinking and sustainability consultant, you and your fictitious team have been hired by a State Department of Tourism to lead the development of a bicycle tour of scenic rural areas that will be held annually as a fundraising event for medical research.
For this project, you will use a systems thinking approach to develop both the details of the tour and the components of the fundraising event from vision to inception.
Your goal is to plan the bicycling route, as well as a unique fundraising event that will appeal to a larger market; one that includes both families and cycling enthusiasts from neighboring states and possibly with national or international appeal.
You will work to create a final plan, including recommendations to be presented to a consortium of Department of Tourism managers. The working assumption is that you will have ten minutes to make your presentation. You will need to develop a brief media presentation (such as a PowerPoint) and compile a hard copy of the data and planning you utilized to arrive at your final recommendations. You should select the specific location where the event will be held as well as the medical research that will be the recipient of your fundraising efforts.
Note: Be careful not to confuse the term current state (as in a system) with a geographical state. From this point on, all references to the geographical location will use the word local.
Your overall objective will be the following:
Organize a local bicycling event that could be enjoyed by either families or more serious cyclists. The bike route will help increase awareness of local scenery and points of interest. In addition, the underlying purpose of the event is to raise awareness and funding for medical research. It is expected that this event will occur annually, so consideration should be given to what is necessary to ensure the continuation of the event.
Initially, you will create a team charter that will outline the goals of your project as well as the roles of a team member. You will also establish a conflict management plan so that if you worked with a team can address issues in a proactive manner. The purpose of the team charter is to aid a team in forming a systems learning organization with clear expectations, so that a team could experience what it is like to work as an efficient, effective system, (use fictitious names)
Complete a Team Learning Charter to establish a team as a viable system.
