Learning how to research and write a paper is an important part of your university education. The paper assignment for Geog 121 is a first step in helping you to learn how to approach the analysis of published articles in contributing to the writing of a research paper. Below you are given the titles of two journal articles associated with each topic. You are required to select one topic and carefully read the two journal articles; the articles are all available online through the UBC library. You must:

• Provide evidence of an understanding of the content of the two articles;
• Critically assess their different views/approaches to the topic they address.

Your paper should contain a bibliography listing works that you cite or which proved helpful in your research, including the two articles you were assigned. You are not required to have read any additional material for this paper, but you might find it helpful to refer back to course material assigned for the weekly readings. If your paper contains maps or diagrams, label them clearly and refer to them in the text. Please carefully read and become familiar with UBC’s policies on plagiarism (http://learningcommons.ubc.ca/resource-guides/avoiding-plagiarism/), as any paper regarded as not meeting the standards may be heavily penalized or rejected.

A basic format for your final paper submission must be observed. This format consists of:

• a cover page, including title, name and email address;
• a one-page bibliography listing works that you cite or which proved helpful in your research, in Harvard format.
