Management Science Business Essay – 25% of your overall mark for the BusinessManagement Major – level I

Through the Young Enterprise programme element of the Level I CORE 60 credit integrated curriculum you have worked as a team member to develop a new business idea and model. The Management Science assessment requires you to take your new business idea and model to a further stage. The Management Science Business Essay needs to be submitted by Midnight, March 17th, 2017.

For the Assessment you are required to, individually, produce a Business Essay which is divided into 4 main sections, in addition to an opening introduction and a bibliography of references. The Business Essay is 2,500 words in length (you are allowed 10% above or below the word limit i.e. 2,250-2,750 words. If you produce an Essay of 10% fewer or more words than the limit, you will have your mark reduced by 10%; if your work is more than 10% below/ above the limit, a further 10% penalty will be imposed).

The four main sections of your Business Essay should be:
1. Summary of your business idea and model
2. Application of Systems Thinking introduced in the course element to your business
3. Application of (at least) one of the remaining two approaches (Analytical and Numerical) introduced in the course element to your business
4. Critical commentary and conclusions on how the Management Science approaches will help in the development of your business, considering problems and challenges involved in using the TWO approaches you have addressed.

Assessment Marking Scheme

1. Summary of your business idea and model (from Young Enterprise team) Following a brief introduction, produce a brief summary of your Young Enterprise team business idea/ model. This should be c 200 words. In this section, you should indicate which Management Science approaches you are to apply and the reasons for your choices, c 150 words.

2. Application of ONE of the three Management Science approaches You need to apply Systems Thinking. For this to be successful, you must describe and indicate how to understand the business holistically, using particular Systems approaches. This should be c c700 words.

3. Application of a SECOND of the three Management Science approaches You need to apply a SECOND of the three approaches introduced in the course, that is: either Analytical or Numerical approach. No matter what your choice for the second approach is, you will have to demonstrate the following: (1) logical connection and progression between the Systems Thinking and the second approach, (2) correct use of the second approach, and (3) justification for any data used.in computations. This should be c700 words.

4. Critical commentary and conclusions on Management Science approaches for developing your business idea/ model In the final main section of your Business Essay you need to produce a critical analysis of how the two Management Science approaches you have used can help your new business to develop. You will need to refer to academic references throughout, but particularly in this section of your Essay. A critical analysis involves indicating how the approaches used assist the development of your business, alongside pointing to any problems, challenges, and weaknesses associated with their use. This should be c750 words

5. Use of language, grammar, style and writing ability You will be assessed on your ability to produce fluent, well-written prose, your spelling, grammar and ability to communicate accurately and effectively.

6. Overall coherence of the assignment, including academic referencing, academic and wider research The application of the Management Science approaches that you have chosen to use need to be appropriate for the business idea that you have been developing (from Young Enterprise and in this Course element). You will be assessed on how well you have connected your business idea to the Management Science approaches used, as well as your demonstration of wider reading, its application and your accuracy of referencing. Academic referencing must be used throughout the Essay, not only in s4, the critical commentary and conclusions. 7.5/100
