Order Description
Media is one of the most influential institutions to socialize individuals about the concept of race and ethnicity, class, gender, and/or age. Having learned about the social issues associated with these vectors of inequality, this book analysis will help students identify the messages individuals receive through media. This book analysis will also have students promote more diversity and acceptance of various cultural, gendered, class, and/or aging backgrounds. Furthermore, students need to analyze children’s reading books and provide a solution to demonstrate more diversity in regards to race, class, gender, and/or age.
Bad example: The book is about a family who live in a house. The family is Asian. They go through stuff.
Good example: The book is about an Asian family who lives in a suburban neighborhood. The family learns how to adjust to a new neighborhood. After moving to the neighborhood, the family deals with racial stereotypes. For instance, the oldest son attends a new school and brings a homemade Asian lunch. When the son brings it to school, his peers make fun of him for not having an Americanized lunch. (Do not use this example or make one similar to it. It would be considered plagiarism)
Make sure all answers relate back to race/ethnicity, class, gender, and/or age and sociological concepts.
Select a minimum of three children’s books that have humans in the story. Read all of the books that you have selected. You can use books from any culture. However, please keep in mind that you must be able to read the words or content. This is not a question. It does not require an answer
List the three books that you have read. Title, Author, and 3 sentences about the book. Translate if it is in a different language. Please provide an in-text citation to each book that you are describing.
E.g. Book 1 is about a male
Book 2 is focuses on a family
Book 3 is about a young girl
Analyze the books and describe your observations that relate back to your sociological knowledge about racial, class, gender, and/or aging inequities.
What are the impacts when children consistently see these images?
E.g. Sentence 1, Sentence 2, Sentence 3, etc.
TIP: If you have trouble finding a concept, look at the heading of each powerpoint slide
