After Walter Haas, Jr. died in 1995, the Oakland A’s were sold and their economic situation shaped its compensation strategies, staffing ( recruiting, selection, and retention strategies ) strategies, and training and development strategies. From the case and supporting references, I will explain how and why Oakland A’s was shaped while giving an analysis. At the age of 35, Billy Beane became the general manager of the Oakland A’s and he was not willing to sustain the financial losses for wins. Mr. Beane was in a position where he had the lowest payroll in baseball. He is opponent was known for spending four times his budget amount per win in a season. Beane was able to cut his cost by taking risks and using their resources wisely. I would consider that Billy Beane implements a compensation strategy that generates more pay. He is known for taking risks in order to save and is not aware that his prospects may leave once they receive publicity for their talents. Beane analysis of selecting high school ball players straight out of school was costly and risky. He made it obvious I would suggest Oakland A’s owner develop salary ranges and a performance management system. Oakland A’s can benefit from the performance management system when the team meets the goals of winning their division and getting to the playoffs. Performance management is enabling the players to be more engaged in their team and improve as one. Billy Beane should be sure that he knows what each position is getting paid for and the ranges depending on their performance.
