Critical Book Review Instructions:
The review should look like one that you would find in an academic political science, sociology, migration studies, or international relations journal. You will have several goals and a very short space in which to achieve them so concision and clarity are essential.
•What is the author’s argument? What is the question they’re answering or puzzle they’re trying to solve, and what is the theory they have?
•What evidence do they use? You don’t have space to list their evidence; you need to summarize the kinds of methods and data they use.
•Who are they talking to? What are the other authors or themes in the literature that they areresponding to, and how is their work original.
•How well do they do it? What is effective about their ideas and/or their data? What flaws canyou spot in the evidence they have or the logic they use?
oMany of you will write very positive reviews, a few of you will write negative reviews,but either way you need to be critical: tell us how you are able to judge the strength orweakness of their argument.
