Behavioral Geography Academic Essay

MY NOTE TO YOU:

(This is only one chapter from my interior design thesis book, basically my senior design project. My project is going to be a hotel in Dubai that has a multicultural theme. Several countries will be represented on every floor, and the facilities in the hotel will represent the country itself. Let’s say the Spa is going to represent morocco. It’s also a senior citizens’ hotel, so it’s basically for the elderly. It’s not a rehab facility but it’s for those who spent years raising their children, maybe their children left them, or other cases in life and they missed out on travelling and experiencing different things. And this hotel will serve activities and facilities to the elderly, also become a safe haven to forget the past and relive the future. The senior citizens are going to age from 50 and above so I will be providing facilities that they enjoy and be very considerate. Facilities such as; an indoor golf area, a spa, a library that has books from all over the world, an area for them to learn different recipes from different cultures, a gym, and of course restaurants and bedrooms.)

We have to design our project based on a theory which answers the question of “how”?

And I picked my theory is Behavioural Geography which by definition is a branch of human science, which deals with the study of cognitive processes with its response to its environment, through behaviourism.

Behavioural Geography:

I need some research about what the theory is in general and if possible how it can help the elderly through architecture (refer to my note) and a small part of how architects have been inspired by it and have done work based on it. And how can I involve this theory in my project after reading Kevin Lynch too.

Kevin Lynch:

We have to pick a hero based on the theory and I decided to pick Kevin Lynch because I was able to relate how he used behavioural geography to how I will. And specifically about his book “Image of the city”. But first of all speak a bit about Kevin Lynch then start talking about the concept of his book that focuses on certain elements, ” http://www.slideshare.net/PlanningTheory/image-of-the-city ” (Starting slide 11) I found this presentation very helpful as it focuses on his concept and the physical content he talks about. But the parts mentioned in the presentation is what I mainly want you to focus on. Again this is an interior design senior project so focus on the elements that would relate.

Why did I pick Kevin Lynch? And why this book? because I want the hotel to feel like a big city, when he talks about “pathways” and other elements I want to base my design on that. My plan is an octagonal shape, and these pathways will somehow lead to the centre of the plan and become a focal point, or it could be the elevators where everyone accesses. “Landmarks” are basically the restaurants. “Nodes” can be the lobby and other busy areas. (I hope this explains things further). I also need pictures to be added related to the content that you’re writing about, similar to the ones in the presentation except their pictures are very low in quality and I need good quality pictures.

(NOTE: IT SAYS 5 PAGES BUT I WILL NEED THE 1375 WORDS SO THE PICTURES CAN’T FILL A PAGE AND BE CONSIDERED A PAGE)

Sustainability (1 page)

This page will focus mostly on the material used in the hotel so what are some of the materials that can be used in the hotel and still be sustainable (keep in mind this is a contemporary hotel), also its almost like a resort for the elderly so be considerate with the material as it needs to be comfortable for them. Specify materials for the areas like; the lobby, spa, library, restaurants, rooms, gym.
