As you read and analyze the text, pay special attention to how the author depicts the character’s choices and how the character changes over time. To facilitate your analysis, pay close attention to the relationship Sméagol has with nature. This relationship might be best understood with reference to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. This second handout gives good context for both Tolkien’s depiction of Sméagol and Aristotle’s systematic treatment of the development of character. A successful paper, therefore, will require references to Aristotle’s Ethics (as presented both in our textbook and in our lectures) and Plato’s Allegory. The paper, however, should remain focused on an analysis of the events in the life of Sméagol.
