Complete the following and submit

1. Using the textbook, look up and write down the strategies food foragers might use for social control and to resolve conflicts. What kinds of conflicts would a food forager have? Try to separate your mind from the type of conflicts you might have as a food producer. Their groups are small, family oriented and tied, and concerns are much about cooperation, shelter and food. What would a food forager try to do to resolve conflicts among their small grouops? Try to be as specific as possible, using textbook or other resources. E.g. Wape hunters believe spirits of deceased punish wrongdoers by hindering their capability to hunt, so they do no harm. Inuit seal hunters know that their livelihood depends upon cooperation, hence they settle their disputes by using song duels where the two conflicting parties stand in one another’s face and sing while beating a drum. They do not stop. The last one standing is the one who "wins" the argument. The songs can last for days. Bushmen in Africa save their conflicts for a ritual in which everyone dresses in tribal best, gathers on a field, and hurls cow dung at each other. Then they break for a feast in which they all share in the food brought for the occasion. Otherwise, food foragers agree to disagree.

2. What about food producers? Be specific.

3. Clarify what is meant in the video by “going to the balcony” and the “third side.”

4. List examples of conflict strategies illustrated in the video. Beside each indicate whether this you would consider this to be a food foraging or food production way to resolve conflict.

5. What does the narrator seem to be implying by using the examples of his conflict resolution strategies among members of groups in very complex societies? Is he encouraging them to proceed through the food producers’ or food foragers’ ways of conflict resolution? What do you think about what he is proposing?

5. What is the “take away” message you gained from the video? What did you learn from the video that can be used in your life?
