Ancient Egyptian Religion Academic Essay

The purpose of this writing assignment is to assess 1) whether you have a correct understanding of
ancient Egyptian beliefs about the workings of nature and 2) whether you have acquired the skills to
analyze and interpret religious texts and imagery from ancient Egypt. In your paper, you must base
your arguments on authentic texts in English translation, images from papyri, tombs or temples, as
well as modern-day scholarship. This means that your paper will include several quotes and excerpts
from translated texts, at least 3 illustrations with your explanations, and references to scholarly books
and articles. The textbook and course website give you sufficient information and sources, but you
are allowed to make use of additional academic resources from the research library. This assignment
is thus an exercise in applying your knowledge of Egyptian religion and articulating your own opinion
in academic writing.
Instructions:
Write an essay on the question of how the ancient Egyptians conceived of the origin and nature of
the created world. How was the cosmos created and how is it maintained? What are the basic divisions,
entities, and phenomena? How do they relate and interact? What is the significance of the concept of
time in all of this? How useful is the scholarly concept of ‘multiplicity of approaches’ in understanding
how the Egyptians expressed their beliefs about the created world? Is there one coherent source that
gives an answer to all these questions or do you have to piece an answer together from a great variety
of dissimilar sources? If the latter is the case, make sure to identify the types and possible inherent
limitations of the various sources you use.
You are required to use quotes or excerpts from at least five different Egyptian texts and three
different images in your paper. Make sure to identify the texts clearly by their title (ancient or, if that
has not been preserved to us, modern title), to succinctly describe the image and explicate how it
illustrates a point made in the paper, and to reference the source from which you quote the translation
or copy the image. If you use or discuss concepts or insights from modern scholars, you must provide
clear references to their work (including page numbers).
You have to submit your paper through turnitin (link provided on MyUCLA)
