The final paper requires students to engage analytically and critically with anthropological readings on violence and the origins of culture. Their explanatory framework involves relating conceptual constructs to observable phenomena. The final paper should interpret and evaluate the theoretical framework of anthropologist René Girard. When reading Girard for the assignment, the student is asked to infer not only how Girard thinks people behave, but why Girard thinks people behave as they do. The purpose of the assignment is not to repeat Girard’s position, but to argue Girard’s position and make his assumptions, key concepts, and conclusions explicit for the reading
