ASSESSMENT 2: 2500 WORD ADVOCACY PLAN AND CRITICAL REFLECTION (60%)

In this essay students are required to present a proposal for an advocacy project/strategy relevant to improving their agency’s service response to the identified client group. This assessment
provides you with the opportunity to explore one of the issues identified in your presentation in more depth. For this essay you are required to:

1. Chose one of the issues facing your client group as previously identified in your video presentation that lends itself to more than individual advocacy ie requires a broader advocacy approach.

2. Develop an advocacy plan using one of the models outlined in workshops and/or in the on-line material. This will include:

– A brief description of the client group, including identification of the primary reasons the client group seeks assistance from your placement agency;
– Identification and implications of the range of challenges/issues to service facing the client group at the individual and structural level.
– Identification of the key social problem to be focused on in the advocacy strategy and an explanation about why the issue is significant.
– Application of an advocacy model that clearly outlines the process you will undertake in relation to developing and actioning your advocacy strategy (note: actioning here will most likely be
hypothetical ie you are not expected to action the plan, however it must be realistic). This will include consideration of the desired outcome, key stakeholders, the voice of clients,
barriers/roadblocks, the advocacy strategy to be used.
**It may be useful to present part of you plan in a grid/table format

3. Discuss how you presented your advocacy plan to your supervisor and/or team and incorporate their comments into your essay.
4. Provide a Critical refection on the role of social work in advocating for improved service access and delivery for client groups in general, and with the identified group, in your placement
agency, in particular. You are required to use the Critical Reflection Model (Gardner, 2014) as discussed in class.
You will be assessed on the following criteria:

1. Through application of one of the Advocacy models discussed in class, you have outlined a realistic advocacy plan. This has included:
• Clearly identifying the client group and explained the current issues facing this group.
• Clearly identifying an issue/problem experienced by the client group that is appropriate for advocacy practice.
• Clearly specified the desired outcome for the group.
• Clearly considered the elements of advocacy practice such as: identifying key stakeholders, the target of the advocacy strategy, the advocacy strategy(ies) to be sued, consideration of potential
roadblocks/barriers, the role of your placement agency, the role of social workers. (30/60)

2. Demonstration that the plan has been discussed with your supervisor and that you have included comments/feedback in your plan. (5/60)

3. Through application of the Gardner (2014) model, the critical reflection has clearly identified:
• thinking around how assumptions and beliefs can impact on practice,
• what occurred for the student during the process,
• what may have contributed to personal roadblocks/barriers
• the learning gained from applying the critical reflection model (20/60)

4. The essay has been clearly presented and structured with few spelling/grammatical issues. Relevant literature has been used to evidence ideas and has been referenced according to APA6 format.
