Abstract

1. Introduction
Writing and research competence is widely regarded as a gatekeeping skill in higher education: students who cannot construct a coherent argument, synthesize sources critically, or manage the research process independently are disadvantaged across every discipline that requires written output. Traditional academic writing courses have often relied on lecture-based delivery of grammar and citation rules, followed by isolated writing assignments that are graded rather than developed through iterative feedback. This model tends to privilege lower-order recall over the higher-order thinking, self-awareness, and motivation that sustained academic writing actually requires.
The flipped classroom model, in which content delivery is moved outside class time and class time is reserved for active, guided practice, has shown promise for skills-based subjects because it frees face-to-face time for exactly the kind of formative feedback that writing development depends on. However, flipping a course is a technical restructuring; it does not by itself guarantee that the learning experience is meaningful, transformative, or motivating. 2. Literature Review

3. Methodology
3.1 Research Design

6. Results
6.1 Writing Performance Outcomes
Comparison of diagnostic and final writing samples showed clear gains across all four rubric dimensions, with the largest improvement observed in source synthesis and organization, the two areas most directly targeted by the Application and Integration activities built into the in-class workshops. Gains in thesis clarity and academic register, while smaller, were also consistent across the cohort, suggesting that the pre-class foundational modules successfully prepared students for the more demanding in-class application tasks.
6.2 Student Perceptions and Engagement
Questionnaire responses mapped to Fink’s six categories were positive overall, with the strongest ratings in Application and Human Dimension, reflecting students’ appreciation of hands-on workshop time and peer feedback. Caring and Learning How to Learn also received favorable ratings, particularly among students who reported that curated real-world research examples had changed how they viewed the relevance of their own topics. Ratings for Foundational Knowledge, while still positive, were comparatively lower, which the design team interpreted as a sign that some pre-class modules may have needed clearer scaffolding for students with weaker prior writing backgrounds.
6.3 Qualitative Findings
Interview data reinforced the questionnaire results. Students frequently described the shift from passive lecture-based instruction to workshop-based class time as the single biggest change in how they experienced the course, and several linked this shift directly to increased motivation to revise their drafts. A smaller number of students noted that the volume of online pre-class work was demanding in weeks with heavier reading loads, a concern that echoes existing critiques of flipped-classroom workload management and points to an area for refinement in future iterations of the course.
7. Discussion
The results suggest that a flipped writing course explicitly designed around Fink’s taxonomy can produce gains that go beyond the technical or grammatical accuracy typically targeted by traditional writing instruction. By deliberately building Human Dimension and Caring activities into the course rather than treating them as by-products of content delivery, the design appears to have supported the affective and identity-related conditions that sustain the effortful, iterative revision process that strong academic writing requires. This is consistent with Fink’s own claim that the six categories interact: in this course, growth in students’ sense of themselves as writers appeared to support their willingness to engage seriously with the more demanding Integration and Application tasks.
The findings also underline a practical implication for course designers: flipping a writing course is necessary but not sufficient. The technical relocation of content to an online space only produced significant learning gains because it was paired with a redesign of in-class time around feedback, workshops, and collaborative meaning-making, rather than a simple repetition of lecture content in a new medium.
8. Limitations
As a single-group, pre-/post-test design conducted with one cohort, this study cannot rule out maturation or general course-taking effects as alternative explanations for the observed writing gains, and the absence of a comparison group taught through a traditional, non-flipped format limits causal claims. The self-report nature of the significant-learning-experience questionnaire is also subject to social-desirability bias. Future work should incorporate a control group taught through a conventional format and should track outcomes across multiple semesters to establish whether the gains observed here are durable and replicable across different student populations and institutional contexts.
9. Conclusion and Implications for Practice
This study has described the design, implementation, and evaluation of a blended, flipped writing and research skills course built on Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning Experiences. The course’s explicit attention to all six categories of learning, rather than Foundational Knowledge alone, appears to have supported measurable gains in students’ writing performance alongside strong self-reported engagement and confidence as writers and researchers. For English and writing instructors considering a shift toward blended or flipped instruction, the model presented here offers a concrete starting point: define learning goals across all six of Fink’s categories before selecting technology or activities, use the online space for content that students can absorb independently, and reserve face-to-face time exclusively for the feedback, collaboration, and identity-building work that cannot easily be replicated online. Used this way, blended learning technology becomes a vehicle for significant learning rather than an end in itself.
